Why Aerial Photography

Aerial Mapping Transforms Site Intelligence

Traditional ground surveys are time-consuming, expensive, and limited in coverage. Drone mapping delivers comprehensive aerial data across large areas efficiently — producing orthomosaics, elevation models, and volumetric measurements that inform better decisions at every stage of a project.

Large area coverage efficiently. A single drone flight can map hundreds of acres in a fraction of the time required for traditional ground survey methods — without sacrificing accuracy.

Orthomosaic and elevation data. Aerial mapping produces georeferenced orthomosaic images and digital elevation models (DEMs) that integrate directly into GIS platforms and CAD workflows.

Construction and earthworks. Volumetric calculations for cut and fill operations, stockpile measurements, and earthworks progress documentation are standard applications for our mapping services.

Repeat surveys for change detection. Regular aerial surveys of the same site over time create a precise change detection record — invaluable for construction progress, environmental monitoring, and land management.

How It Works

From First Call to Final Delivery

01
Project Scoping

Site area, accuracy requirements, deliverable formats, and intended use. We design the flight plan and ground control point strategy for your specific requirements.

02
Ground Control

Ground control points (GCPs) established for projects requiring survey-grade accuracy. Coordinated with your survey team if applicable.

03
Data Collection

Systematic aerial data collection across your site with complete overlap for photogrammetric processing.

04
Processing and Delivery

Data processed into orthomosaics, DEMs, and other requested deliverables. Files delivered in industry-standard formats including GeoTIFF, LAS, and DXF.

Common Questions

Mapping & Surveying FAQ

What accuracy can I expect from drone mapping?

Standard drone mapping with ground control points achieves horizontal accuracy of 2 to 5 centimeters and vertical accuracy of 3 to 8 centimeters under good conditions. Survey-grade accuracy requirements should be discussed during consultation so we can design an appropriate ground control strategy.

What file formats do you deliver?

We deliver standard geospatial formats including GeoTIFF orthomosaics, LAS/LAZ point clouds, DEM files compatible with ArcGIS and QGIS, and DXF/DWG for CAD integration. Custom format requirements can be accommodated.

Can you map very large areas?

Yes. Large area projects are managed through multi-flight planning and data processing workflows. We regularly complete projects covering hundreds of acres. Very large projects (1,000+ acres) may require multiple days of data collection.

Do you provide ground control point services?

We can establish and survey ground control points using GPS equipment for projects requiring enhanced accuracy. For survey-grade applications, we recommend coordinating with a licensed land surveyor for GCP placement and verification.

Drone-based mapping and surveying has transformed project planning and engineering documentation across multiple industries — delivering survey-grade accuracy at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional ground-based survey methods for appropriate applications. Photogrammetry processing of drone imagery generates accurate digital surface models, contour maps, and volumetric calculations for earthwork, grading, and site development projects. Mining and quarry operations use drone mapping to calculate stockpile volumes, track extraction progress, and monitor site conditions on a regular schedule, replacing time-consuming and potentially hazardous manual measurement. Agricultural precision mapping identifies crop stress, irrigation inefficiencies, and soil variation patterns across large farm parcels, enabling targeted interventions that improve yield and reduce input costs. Infrastructure inspection of roads, bridges, levees, and utilities benefits from drone mapping that creates persistent visual records of conditions for maintenance planning and regulatory compliance. SkyPoint Advisory provides professional drone mapping and surveying services with professional-grade equipment and FAA Part 107 certification.
